Communities Against COVID
During the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, two of HYPE’s leaders spearheaded an initiative known as Communities Against COVID. With doctors and medical personnel working long shifts to compensate for the workforce shortage, many of them were forsaking their own well-being. Simultaneously, families in impoverished areas were often neglected, making it difficult for them to procure food on a daily basis. Seeing these problems in the community, HYPE fundraised over $1,000 in the community to help purchase food that supported understaffed physicians, overwhelmed clinics, and struggling food banks, distributing food within the Atlanta area to impact almost 1,000 people.

Public health campaign
In collaboration with Leadership Initatives, HYPE planned and executed a public health campaign in Bauchi State, Nigeria, to help promote healthy sanitation practices. With limited access to clean water, sanitation infrastructure, or education on proper hygienic practices, HYPE’s mission was to disseminate resources that made public health information more readily available to villages in Bauchi State. HYPE’s leaders had the opportunity to connect directly with Nigerian liaisons that provided technical input on the curation of the resources, ensuring that the terminology used would be understood by our intended audience. In addition, through a combination of hands-on learning and engaging presentation, we sought to optimize educational retention as a means to facilitate a long-term shift to proper sanitation. By instilling these values, especially in the youth, HYPE was able to better prepare these civilians to combat diseases that arise from poor hygienic conditions. Below are pages excerpted from the materials we prepared.

COVID Research
In partnership with the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, HYPE and its team have begun developing a potential preventative therapeutic to inhibit the activity of the COVID-19 virus. By screening over 4,000 drugs through computational and experimental means, the best inhibitors of the virus were identified and synthesized in a nanoparticle-based drug delivery system. The research was presented at several conferences and symposiums, where it received recognition at the international level. The work has been published in scientific journals and featured by numerous news outlets.

HOSA Partnership
HYPE has begun partnering with HOSA – Future Health Professionals, the largest career and technical organization for future health professionals. Through this collaboration, HYPE is working to support the aspirations of 275,000 members into the health sciences. By speaking in front of Congress and the United Nations, as well as facilitating events and programming that allow students to immerse themselves in health science careers, HYPE is making tangible strides towards helping young students across the world.
